Electric Vehicle Owners: What to Know About EV-Friendly Parking Near MCI

You did the math when you bought your EV. You know what a kilowatt-hour costs at home, which fast chargers sit along I-29, and how much range you lose when Kansas City drops below freezing. Then you book a flight out of MCI, and a new question pops up: where do I leave the car?

Should you hunt for one of the airport’s chargers? Will the battery be flat when you get back? Is it safe to leave a $50,000 car in an outdoor lot for a week? Plenty of EV drivers park with us, so here is the straight answer to each of those questions.

Yes, Kansas City International Airport (MCI/KCI) has EV charging. Level 2 chargers sit on Level 4 of the terminal garage, in the surface lot and in Economy Lot C, all first come, first served. You still pay the normal parking rate ($30/day in the garage).

For trips longer than a day or two, most EV owners don’t need to charge at the airport. A healthy EV loses only a small amount of charge while parked, so arriving with 60–80% and parking off-airport at Trueparkings, from $6.49/day with a free 5-minute shuttle, is usually the cheaper and easier choice.

Where Are the EV Chargers at MCI?

When the new terminal opened in 2023, the airport added dozens of chargers across its lots. Here’s where you’ll find them today:

Location EV charging spaces Daily parking rate Good to know
Terminal Garage, Level 4 Row E 52 + 4 accessible $30 Closest to the terminal; most chargers
Surface (Circle) Lot, Row B2 6 + 1 accessible $22 Short walk; very limited spots
Economy Lot C 24 $9 Blue bus to terminal, about every 20 min
Garage Valet Offered with valet $40 Staff handle your car and keys
Cell Phone Lot (Bern St.) 3 Free, waiting only For pickups, not for parking while you fly

Charger counts from iFly’s MCI parking guide, the Kansas City Star and KCTV5; rates effective Sept. 15, 2026.

Notice the catch. You can’t reserve any of these spaces. On a busy Monday morning or a holiday weekend, the charger rows fill early, and once your car is plugged in, it stays there for your whole trip whether it’s charging or not.

Do You Actually Need to Charge While You Fly?

For most trips, no. This is the part that surprises a lot of first-time EV travelers.

A parked EV is mostly asleep. With always-on features turned off, most modern EVs lose only a few percent of charge over a week. Owners usually notice bigger drops only when they leave features like sentry or camera modes running, or when a hard freeze hits. Your owner’s manual will tell you what to expect for your model.

So think about the airport charger this way. If you leave home with 70% and lose a few percent while you’re gone, you come back with plenty to get home. Paying garage rates for a week just to keep a charger plugged in costs a lot more than one home charging session.

Where an airport charger does make sense:

  • Long-distance drivers arriving at MCI from Wichita, Omaha or rural Missouri with a low battery.
  • Same-day or overnight trips where the garage’s convenience is worth $30.
  • Older EVs with small batteries, where every mile matters on the drive home.

What Does Parking an EV at MCI Really Cost?

Here’s a 5-day trip, side by side. If you snag a charger, you still pay the lot’s daily rate.

Option Daily rate 5-day total Charging? Can you reserve?
Garage Valet $40 $200 Offered No
Terminal Garage $30 $150 If a spot is free No
Surface Lot $22 $110 If 1 of 7 spots is free No
Economy Lot $9 $45 If a spot is free No
Trueparkings $6.49–$9.99 $32–$50 No; arrive charged Yes, guaranteed

Final Trueparkings price depends on your dates. See more numbers in our offsite vs. onsite cost breakdown.

Over a five-day trip, the gap between the garage and Trueparkings is about $100 to $118. That covers a lot of home charging.

Why EV Owners Choose Trueparkings Near MCI

We’ll be upfront: we don’t have chargers on our lot. What we do have is everything that matters once your EV is parked for a few days, at a price that leaves room for a full charge when you get home.

  • You keep your key or phone key. It’s self-park, so nobody else drives your car or needs your app access.
  • A well-lit lot with 24/7 cameras. Your car sits in a monitored, gated lot with staff on site around the clock.
  • Help with a dead 12-volt battery. Even EVs rely on a small 12V battery, and cold weather can drain it. Battery jump-starts are available on site (small extra fee).
  • A 5-minute ride to the terminal. Our free shuttle runs 24/7, every 15–20 minutes, from 11530 NW Prairie View Road, about 1.3 miles away.
  • Flexible timing. Book direct on trueparkings.com and you can come and go any time within your booked dates, at no extra cost.
  • Snow removal. Kansas City winters are real; we clear the lot so you can drive straight out.

EV Owner’s Checklist Before Parking at MCI

  1. Charge at home the night before. Aim for 70–80%; it’s cheaper than anywhere else and kind to your battery.
  2. Turn off power-hungry features. Disable sentry/camera mode and cabin overheat protection for the trip.
  3. Note your range for the drive home. If it’s tight, pick a fast charger along I-29 in your app before you leave.
  4. Pull in 20 minutes before you want to be at the terminal. That covers check-in and the shuttle ride. See directions to our lot.
  5. Give us your return flight details. We’ll text you when it’s time for pickup at doors 3G/3H.
  6. Precondition on the way back. On the shuttle, use your app to warm the cabin and battery, so you leave with full range on a cold night.

A. Yes. MCI has Level 2 chargers in the terminal garage (Level 4), the surface lot and Economy Lot C. They are first come, first served, and regular parking rates apply.

Q. Can I reserve an EV charging spot at MCI?
A. No. Airport charging spaces can’t be reserved. If you need a guaranteed space, book an off-airport lot like Trueparkings ahead of time and arrive with enough charge.

Q. How much battery will my EV lose while parked at the airport?
A. With always-on features turned off, most EVs lose only a few percent over a week. Cold weather and features like sentry mode can increase the drop.

Q. Is it safe to leave a Tesla or other EV at off-airport parking?
A. At Trueparkings, your EV sits in a well-lit, gated lot with 24/7 camera monitoring and on-site staff. You keep your key, since it’s self-park.

Q. Does Trueparkings have EV chargers?
A. Not at this time. Most travelers charge at home before the trip, which costs less than paying garage rates to plug in at the airport.

Q. Where can I charge my EV near MCI on the way home?
A. Use your car’s navigation or a charging app to find fast chargers along I-29 and in the Northland. The airport’s Economy Lot and garage chargers are also an option if you’re parked there.

Park Smart, Charge at Home

Owning an EV doesn’t make airport parking harder. Charge up the night before, switch off the extras, and leave your car somewhere safe and affordable. You’ll come home to a car that’s ready to drive and a parking bill that’s far smaller than the garage.
